InBio stands for Instituto Nacional de Biodiversidad in Spanish which means national institute of biodiversity. This is a not for profit organization founded in 1989 with the sole purpose of raising local awareness in Costa Rica of the biodiversity to be found in this country to ensure its conservation. What InBio does is hire local personnel and trains them to be parataxonomists whose jobs is doing the essential task of collecting and isolating new species and hand them down to taxonomists. InBio raises funds to achieve their very important work from big pharmaceutical enterprises that are aware that any new findings from the Costa Rica natural habitats will be the future medicines to cure the many current incurable diseases or that could at least improve the living standards of many people that suffer from incurable diseases.

InBio has a park open to the public in Santo Domingo de Heredia. This visitor center is perfect to visit before embarking to visit all of the stunning Costa Rica National Parks and Natural Reserves. InBio presents to its visitors a very modern computerized interactive demonstration, with maps, exhibits of plants and animals of Costa Rica protected areas. InBio also has available for its visitors a research library where you can use the internet and make photocopies of the material from the library.
