Costa Rica Newspapers
Posted by pieter under Facts
Leading newspaper publisher is Grupo Nacion with a portfolio of several daily newspapers in Costa Rica and even in Guatemala. La Nacion, founded in 1946 is the daily newspaper with the best journalistic reputation and the highest circulation. But Grupo Nacion also publishes the daily tabloids Al Dia and the more superficial La Teja. Other newspapers in Costa Rica are La Prensa Libre, Costa Ricas oldest newspaper, El Heraldo and La Republica. The only daily newspaper in the English language is the Tico Times. Costa Rica has become a favorite country to retire or invest in the highly profitable real estate for people from the United States. Combined with the many international businesses who have seats in Costa Rica, this created the market for an English written newspaper. Most of the circulation of the newspapers is sold in stores and supermarkets, but during morning rush hour the streets are full of vendors and it very common to buy a newspaper, while waiting in line for a traffic light to turn green. The press in Cost Rica, especially the newspaper La Nacion has a very critical attitude towards the government and has revealed several high level corruption affairs that brought three Costa Rican ex-presidents behind bars. Since the information technology infrastructure is very ell developed in Costa Rica, most newspapers have an online edition.
