The city of Puerto Jimenez is the main city on the Osa Penisula, in the south of the Costa Rican province of Puntarenas, close to the Panamanian border. The peninsula forms a bay, with the name Golfo Dulce. Puerto Jimenez is located on the right side of the peninsula, directly facing Golfito across the gulf on the mainland. The only way to reach the Osa peninsula by land is following the Pan-American highway from San Jose, through Cartago and after crossing the mountains of the Cerro de la Meurte, taking a right turn in Chacarita to the peninsula. A trip by car or public bus that can take up to 10 hours. A faster way to reach Puerto Jimenez is by air. The flight from the Central Valley will take no more than one and half hour and the fares from Pavas’ Tobias Bolanos Airport or Alajuela’s Juan Santamaria International Airport are cheap. Favorite destinations on the Osa Peninsula are Drake Bay and Corcovado National Park, easily accessible from Puerto Jimenez. Puerto Jimenez is quiet town, which started to develop in the 1960’s. Nowadays most of the Osa Peninsula is protected area, but the main activity used to be logging and gold mining. Today there are still people trying their luck in the search for gold. This provides Puerto Jimenez with its unique and special mixture of miners and tourists; rustic with some rough edges. Any kind of accommodation from backpackers lodges to luxurious resorts can be found completed with a nice selection of bars, restaurants and local tour operators. Puerto Jimenez is the perfect spot for sport fishing trips and dolphin searching tours in the Golfo Dulce. Naturally for the more adventurous possibilities for hiking biking, kayaking, rappelling are available. Being the last town before entering Corcovada National Park, the town hosts a ranger station, the perfect spot to start the preparation for a visit to this beautiful park. Close to Puerto Jimenez you find a selection of pristine beaches. A ferry connects Puerto Jimenez with Golfito, close to Piedras Blancas National Park. If you are looking for a vibrant nightlife, Puerto Jimenez is not your pick. Having miners in town, cashing in on their finds and spending it in the cantinas can create a somewhat rough atmosphere at night. But outside the center of the town you can find plenty of other locations to enjoy a tropical cocktail, topped off with a beautiful sunset.
