Montezuma is a town for visitors who are looking beyond the usual destinations in Costa Rica. Located in the tip of the peninsula, facing the east overlooking the Bay of Nicoya, Montezuma has a reputation as a laid-back, easy going town, almost as exotic as its name. Once a fisher town, sheltered by high cliffs that are covered with lush tropical vegetation, with beautiful pristine beaches Montezuma has recently been discovered by a wider audience. What makes Montezuma such a unique destination is that it offers all you need for a perfect vacation. The town offers a wide range of shops, stands, bars and restaurants ranging from alternative to more mainstream. Montezuma has a created an almost Caribbean atmosphere on the other side of Costa Rica. North of Montezuma the beautiful beach of Playa Grande hosts sun bathers and surfers. A stroll along the beach is breathtaking and for those with an interest in biology will take a special interest in the many tidal pools, which show a fascinating mini ecosystem between tides. Right outside Montezuma trails lead to the Montezuma waterfalls, famous allover Costa Rica. A breathtaking set of three waterfalls, complete with swimming holes to cool down and marvel the forces of water rushing down the rocks. There is even a jumping point from where you can leap 30 feet down into deep water. Read the signs carefully, because some pools of the Montezuma waterfalls are too shallow for jumping or diving. From Montezuma you can take a boat ride to Jaco on the mainland of Costa Rica, just an hour across the bay of Nicoya. Horseback riders can take the trip along the coast from Montezuma to the El Chorro waterfall, where the fresh water pours into pools formed in the lava rock. In for something different, take a boat trip from Montezuma to the Tortuga Islands and combine swimming, snorkeling with a beach party. Not to miss is a visit to one of Costa Rica’s national parks: Cabo Blanco National Reserve, located only 9 km from Montezuma. At night the town of Montezuma offers a wide selection of drinks and food for the low budget traveler as well as the more wealthy tourist. This right mix gives Montezuma something special, unique in Costa Rica.
