Cabo Matapalo, Puntarenas
Posted by pieter under Beach
Cabo Matapalo is located on the tip of the Osa Peninsula in the Province of Puntarenas, right in front of Pavones on the mainland. It’s one of Costa Rica’s most isolated and pristine destinations. Cabo Matapalo has every attraction that Costa Rica has to offer: rainforest, beautiful tropical beaches and a great surf. Besides that Cabo Matapalo is close to the entrance of the Corcovado National Park and offers quick access to Isla del Cano. Scattered in the dense jungle of Cabo Matapalo you can find a wide variety of accommodations in every price class from simple lodgings to all-inclusive. Cabo Matapalo owes much of it’s charm to its isolation. San Jose in the Central Valley is more than a 10 hour drive away. The easiest way to reach Cabo Matapalo by car is taking the ferry from Golfito to Puerto Jimenez, from where a less than an hour drive takes you to the final destination. But no problem if you don’t want to waste your time on driving there. From Juan Santamaria International Airport in Alajuela or Tobias Bolanos Domestic Airport in San Jose you can take a domestic flight to Puerto Jimenez. The Osa Peninsula is a well kept secret and its nature pristine. The wide stretch of beach offers a perfect opportunity to stroll, swim, relax and to observe the magnificent sunsets the Pacific Coast is famous for. Of course there are plenty possibilities to take fishing, diving or snorkelling tours. The famous sea food dishes are abundant, since fresh products are caught on a daily basis. During the rainy season Cabo Matapalo becomes even more remote because the rudimentary roads are impossible to drive without a 4-wheel drive. Some hotels close during the wet season in the months of September and October, so you definitely have to plan your trip ahead. For people who want to have a truly unique and pure Costa Rican experience should certainly consider to travel to this special tropical paradise.
