Avellana Beach

Avellana Beach is located about nine miles south of Tamarindo Beach in Guanacaste. This white sand beach lies almost next to Playa Negra and together they offer very exciting surfing. According to the wave experts, Avellana Beach has great beach break, half of it being hollow rights and lefts. Offshore swells at Avellana Beach have been known to reach 18 feet. Avellana Beach is surfers paradise, especially when there is high tides and the waves form almost perfect tubes along its more than a mile long stretch. Overall, Avellana Beach provides isolation from the touristy beach destinations and a lot of tranquility along with its great waves and around eight different surf breaks both to the left and right. For all those that don’t know much about surfing, all the descriptions about breaks and big waves left and right translate into strong currents; so swimming at this beach is not exactly recommended. You don’t have to be a surfer to enjoy Avellana Beach. You can take a nice relaxing horseback riding tour along the shore or play golf. Most of the accommodations at this surfer paradise beach are affordable, so that is something to take advantage of. Some of the recommended places to stay at in Avellana Beach are: Cabinas las Olas, Hotel Playa Negra, and the upscale Hacienda Pinilla Beach Resort. Hacienda Pinilla Beach Resort is a luxurious resort with an 18 hole championship golf course, that is said to be among one of the best in Costa Rica.
